Skills Assessment Requirements

Unless you are exempt in very limited circumstances, you are required to have a positive Skills Assessment to apply for the visas listed above.

Skills Assessment authority for Insurance Loss Adjusters is Vocational Education and Training Assess (VETASSESS). To have a positive skills assessment, you must meet the following criteria:

  • AQF Certificate IV Qualification in a highly relevant field of study AND at least one year of post-qualification highly relevant employment at an appropriate skill level in the last five years; or
  • AQF Certificate IV Qualification that is not a highly relevant field of study AND at least two years post-qualification highly relevant employment at an appropriate skill level in the last five years; or
  • AQF Certificate III Qualification in a highly relevant field of study AND at least three years of post-qualification highly relevant employment at an appropriate skill level in the last five years.
  • Highly relevant fields of study include a major focus on Insurance, Loss Adjusting or Security and Risk Management

Important

According to VETASSESS, if the applicant holds a qualification comparable to AQF Certificate III in a highly relevant field, then three years of highly relevant employment in the last five years is required.

Group Description

Conduct investigations into insurance claims to ensure their validity, inspect and assess the damage and loss to insured properties and businesses, estimate insurance costs, and inspect insured properties to evaluate conditions affecting underwriting standards.

Tasks

  • Examining scenes of incidents resulting in insurance claims to determine causes and effects
  • Interviewing witnesses and claimants to obtain details required to assess the validity of claims and identify the parties responsible for accidents, damage and loss, and preparing statements and reports
  • Inspecting damaged buildings, equipment and motor vehicles and estimating the cost of repairs
  • Estimating business losses resulting from fire, theft and other business disruptions
  • Reporting the extent of damage and estimated costs to the insurer
  • Inspecting property, buildings and operations of commercial and industrial establishments to assess physical conditions and work practices
  • Evaluating the adequacy of security, fire and related systems
  • Preparing reports and recommending action to reduce risks
  • Compiling data which influences the determination of premium rates

Skill Level

In Australia and New Zealand:

Most occupations in this unit group have a level of skill commensurate with the following qualifications and experience:

  • Australia (ANZSCO Skill Level 3)
    • AQF Certificate III + 2 years on-the-job training; or
    • AQF Certificate IV
  • New Zealand (ANZSCO Skill Level 3)
    • NSQF Level 4 qualification

In some instances, relevant experience and/or on-the-job training may be required in addition to the formal qualification. This occupation may require registration or licensing.
