Skills Assessment Requirements

Unless you are exempt in very limited circumstances, you are required to have a positive Skills Assessment to apply for the visas listed above.

Skills Assessment authority for Restaurant Manager is Vocational Education and Training Assess (VETASSESS). To have a positive skills assessment, you must meet the following criteria:

  • Qualification assessed at least AQF Diploma level with a highly relevant field of study AND at least one-year post-qualification highly relevant employment at an appropriate skill level in the last five years; or
  • Qualification assessed at least AQF Diploma level with an additional qualification at least AQF Certificate IV in a highly relevant field of study AND at least one year of post-qualification highly relevant employment at an appropriate skill level in the last five years; or
  • Qualification assessed at least AQF Diploma level without a highly relevant field of study and at least two years of post-qualification highly relevant employment at an appropriate skill level in the last five years
  • The highly relevant employment must be paid and equate to 20 hours or more per week to be recognised by VETASSESS
  • A positive skills assessment outcome is dependent on a positive assessment of both qualifications and employment
  • The highly relevant fields of study include Hospitability Management and Food and Beverage Services
  • The following are acceptable categories of restaurants that demonstrate employment experience: family style restaurants, casual dining restaurants and fine dining restaurants. It should be noted that fast food restaurants are not acceptable to demonstrate adequate employment experience as a Restaurant Manager.

Important

According to VETASSESS, pre-qualification experience for Restaurant Managers may be considered in a skills assessment if the experience meets the following requirements:

  • Three years of relevant employment gained within the previous 10 years; and
  • One year of highly relevant employment performed at the required skill level gained in the last five years.

  • Planning menus in consultation with Chefs
  • Planning and organising special functions
  • Arranging the purchasing and pricing of goods according to budget
  • Maintaining records of stock levels and financial transactions
  • Ensuring dining facilities comply with health regulations and are clean, functional and of suitable appearance
  • Conferring with customers to assess their satisfaction with meals and service
  • Selecting, training and supervising waiting and kitchen staff
  • May take reservations, greet guests and assist in taking orders

Skill Level

Most occupations in this unit group have a level of skill commensurate with the qualifications and experience outlined below.
In Australia:
AQF Associate Degree, Advanced Diploma or Diploma (ANZSCO Skill Level 2)

In New Zealand:
NZ Register Diploma (ANZSCO Skill Level 2)

At least three years of relevant experience may substitute for the formal qualifications listed above. In some instances relevant experience and/or on-the-job training may be required in addition to the formal qualification.
