Skills Assessment Requirements |
Unless you are exempt in very limited circumstances, you are required to have a positive Skills Assessment to apply for the visas listed above. Skills Assessment authority for Educational Psychologist is Australian Psychological Society Limited (APS). To have a positive skills assessment, you must meet the following criteria: - Two Pathways to skills assessment through APS:
- Pathway A – Qualification comparable to six years of study in psychology in Australia
- Pathway B- Hold unconditional general registration as a psychologist in Australia at the time of applying for an assessment
- IELTS 6 and above
- The APS may also conduct a separate assessment of skilled employment history (particularly for those applying for the subclass 189 visa who which to include claims of relevant work experience as part of an expression of interest). To have a basis for applying for an assessment of skilled employment history, you must meet the following criteria:
- Be less than 50 years old
- Have a positive skills assessment from the APS
- Within the past 10 years either:
- Worked as a general registered psychologist for at least 1 year in Australia or;
- Worked as a registered psychologist for at least 3 years in countries where there is state/national registration for psychologists (e.g. Canada, New Zealand, South Africa, USA) or;
- Since attaining my highest academic qualification in psychology , I have worked in a psychological role for at least 3 years in a country where there is no state/national registration or;
- Since attaining a research-only postgraduate degree in psychology (e.g. PhD), I have worked in an academic role at a recognised tertiary/research institute for at least one year in Australia or 3 years overseas.
- You can provide evidence of my relevant employment history which shows relevant employment of at least 20 hours per week in each position you have held
- For each position that you were employed for at least 20 hours per week, you can provide supporting documents which show that you were employed as a psychologist or in a psychological role

- administering and interpreting diagnostic tests and formulating plans for treatment
- developing, administering and evaluating individual and group treatment programs
- consulting with other professionals on details of cases and treatment plans
- conducting research studies of motivation in learning, group performance and individual differences in mental abilities and educational performance
- collecting data and analysing characteristics of students and recommending educational programs
- formulating achievement, diagnostic and predictive tests for use by teachers in planning methods and content of instruction
- developing interview techniques, psychological tests and other aids in workplace selection, placement, appraisal and promotion
- conducting surveys and research studies on job design, work groups, morale, motivation, supervision and management
- performing job analyses and establishing job requirements by observing and interviewing employees and managers
Skill Level Most occupations in this unit group have a level of skill commensurate with a bachelor degree or higher qualification. In some instances relevant experience and/or on-the-job training may be required in addition to the formal qualification (ANZSCO Skill Level 1). Registration or licensing may be required.
