Skills Assessment Requirements |
Unless you are exempt in very limited circumstances, you are required to have a positive Skills Assessment to apply for the visas listed above. Skills Assessment authority for Psychologist Nec is Australian Psychological Society (APS). To have a positive skills assessment, you must meet the following criteria: - Applicants must be less than 50 years old
- English Language Requirements
- IELTS – minimum score of 7 in all components
- PTE Academic – minimum score of 65 in all components
- TOEFL iBT – minimum score of 24 in listening and reading, 27 in writing and 23 in speaking
- Qualification Requirements
- Applicant must have completed qualifications that are comparable to six years of study in psychology in Australia; OR
- Hold unconditional general registration as a psychologist in Australia at the time of the application
- Employment Experience Requirements
- In countries where there is a state/national registration for psychologists (e.g. Canada, New Zealand, South Africa, USA), applicants must have worked as a registered psychologist for at least three years; or
- In countries where there is no state/national registration for psychologists, applicants must have worked in a psychological role for at least 3 years after attaining their highest psychologist qualification
- If the applicant attained a research-only postgraduate degree in psychology, they must have worked in an academic role at a recognised tertiary institution or at least one year in Australia or three years overseas
- Documentation Requirements
- Applicants must be able to provide evidence of their relevant employment history; and
- Applicants must also provide supporting documentation to demonstrate they were employed as a psychologist or in a psychological role
- Note: If you have completed your qualification in New Zealand, you can obtain registration in Australia through the Trans-Tasman Mutual Recognition Agreement

Investigate, assess and provide treatment and counselling to foster optimal personal, social, educational and occupational adjustment and development. Tasks - Collecting data about clients and assessing their cognitive, behavioural and emotional disorders
- Administering and interpreting diagnostic tests and formulating plans for treatment
- Developing, administering and evaluating individual and group treatment programs
- Consulting with other professionals on details of cases and treatment plans
- Conducting research studies of motivation in learning, group performance and individual differences in mental abilities and educational performance
- Collecting data and analysing characteristics of students and recommending educational programs
- Formulating achievement, diagnostic and predictive tests for use by teachers in planning methods and content of instruction
- Developing interview techniques, psychological tests and other aids in workplace selection, placement, appraisal and promotion
- Conducting surveys and research studies on job design, work groups, morale, motivation, supervision and management
- Performing job analyses and establishing job requirements by observing and interviewing employees and managers
Skill Level Most occupations in this unit group have a level of skill commensurate with a bachelor degree or higher qualification. In some instances relevant experience and/or on-the-job training may be required in addition to the formal qualification (ANZSCO Skill Level 1). Registration or licensing may be required.
