Income or Qualification Pathways

  • Hold a job offer with a salary above the high-income threshold (currently AUD $153,600 per year).
  • Be employed in a role already paying above the threshold.
  • Recently completed a PhD in one of the target sectors, with proven outstanding academic results.

Applicants should also demonstrate a strong history of professional recognition through achievements such as patents, leadership roles, awards, memberships in professional associations, research publications, or other recognised contributions. PhD students who can prove outstanding global recognition and potential across the listed industries are also eligible.

Nominator Requirements

  • An Australian citizen, permanent resident, or eligible New Zealand citizen, OR
  • An Australian organisation with a national reputation in the applicant’s field.

The nominator’s role is to validate the applicant’s achievements and explain how they will benefit Australia. Importantly, the nominator is not required to employ the applicant.

Application Process – Global Talent Independent Program (Subclass 858)

Step 1: Expression of Interest (EOI)
Submit an EOI via the Global Talent contact form, providing evidence of meeting eligibility and sector requirements.

Step 2: Visa Application
Once the EOI is approved, a unique identifier is issued. Using this, applicants can apply for the Subclass 858 visa.
Applicants must meet health and character requirements.
Once all conditions are satisfied, the Department of Home Affairs will finalise the application.
If approved, applicants receive permanent residency.
