Ottawa, September 23, 2021

A family reunion is a top goal for the Canadian government. Under the Parents and Grandparents (PGP) Program, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) will accept a record amount of up to 30,000 applications this year, the biggest single intake ever. IRCC is currently issuing application invites to selected potential sponsors who expressed interest in sponsoring their parents and grandparents last year.

Potential sponsors who filled out interest to sponsor forms in the autumn of 2020 should check their email accounts since invitations to apply will be delivered through email.

Those who submitted interest to sponsor forms in 2020 but lost their confirmation number or are now using a different email address than the one originally submitted on their form can use the Lost My Confirmation Number tool to retrieve their confirmation number and invitation status, as well as enter a new email address. After all invites to apply have been sent out, this tool will become available.

Those who are invited to apply as part of this procedure will have 60 days to do so and must do so using the IRCC's new Permanent Residence Portal. Those who have been invited but are unable to apply online due to accessibility issues may obtain a print copy of the application package by emailing IRCC before October 21, 2021.

The income requirement for the 2020 tax year will remain the minimum necessary income, rather than the minimum necessary income plus 30%, and regular Employment Insurance benefits and temporary COVID-19 benefits, such as the Canada Emergency Response Benefit, will be counted toward the sponsor's income. This security ensures that applicants are not punished if they lose income as a result of the pandemic.

Those who were not asked to apply can consider applying for a super visa, which enables parents and grandparents to stay in Canada for up to two years without having to renew their status. A super visa allows for up to ten years of repeated admissions. Given the continuing pandemic, travelers visiting Canada should make sure they have sufficient health insurance.
