Every two weeks, Canada holds draws for Express Entry, but not today!

The size of the record-breaking all-program draw from just seven days prior was matched by Canada's Express Entry draw on January 18th. All-program refers to the fact that the Federal Skilled Worker (FSW), Canadian Experience Class (CEC), and Federal Skilled Trades (FST) programs were all taken into account when selecting participants for the draw.

5,500 applicants received an Invitation to Apply in the Express Entry draw for immigration to Canada on January 18. (ITA).

The cutoff score for this draw's Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) was 490 points.

Note: The CRS score cut-off was incorrectly listed as 507 points when this draw was first posted to the IRCC website. Since then, IRCC has changed the cutoff point to 490 points.

Why were there consecutive draws twice?

There is no requirement to follow this schedule, even though Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) typically hold draws every two weeks. IRCC is free to depart from it without warning or justification.

Due to the lack of an explanation, we can only assume that the seven-week break played a role.

Express Entry draws started up again on January 11 last week. There hadn't been a draw prior to that since November 23.

IRCC switched the entire Canadian immigration system, including Express Entry, to the new 2021 National Occupational Classification Codes (NOC Codes) on November 16, 2022, although we don't know why the pause occurred. Candidates for Express Entry reported a wide range of bugs on November 23 as a result of the change, including some who did not receive invitations despite having the necessary score. It's possible that the IRCC suspended Express Entry draws so it could address systemic problems before inviting more applicants.

This year, Canada plans to welcome 465,000 new permanent residents. A total of 82,880 admissions through regular Express Entry streams are anticipated, and an additional 105,500 admissions through all Provincial Nominee Program (PNP) streams, including those that are aligned with Express Entry, are anticipated.

It could be a big year for Express Entry and PNP invitations as IRCC will need to continue inviting Express Entry applicants in their inventory in order to meet 2023's record-high immigration targets.
