India and Germany have taken a major step to strengthen educational cooperation by agreeing to issue gratis visas for short-term student exchanges. The move will allow school and college groups to travel between the two countries without visa fees, boosting academic and cultural ties.

The announcement followed delegation-level talks in New Delhi between External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and German Federal Minister of Foreign Affairs Johann Wadephul.

According to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), both sides reviewed the broad scope of their Strategic Partnership, noting progress in areas such as trade, investment, defence, technology, green development, and people-to-people exchanges.

“The two sides agreed on gratis visas for short-term school and college visits to further promote student exchanges and education ties,” the MEA said in a press release.

Cooperation Beyond Education

Alongside the education initiative, India and Germany also agreed to establish a new bilateral consultation mechanism on the Indo-Pacific region. Discussions further covered pressing global issues, including the Russia-Ukraine conflict, the situation in the Middle East, and regional security matters.

Jaishankar also expressed India’s appreciation for Germany’s continued solidarity and support in the global fight against terrorism.

Expanding Strategic Partnership

During his visit, Wadephul met Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal, accompanied by a high-level business delegation. Talks focused on strengthening the fast-growing economic partnership, particularly in green technology, AI, digital transformation, and sustainable development.

The German minister also visited Bengaluru, where he engaged with German companies operating in India and toured innovation hubs such as ISRO and the Indian Institute of Science (IISc). The visit highlighted new opportunities for collaboration in space technology, research, and sustainable urban development.

The engagement comes at a significant milestone—the 25th anniversary of the India-Germany Strategic Partnership, underscoring both nations’ shared democratic values and commitment to global peace and stability.
