The wait is over for skilled migrants looking to secure Tasmania state nomination. Migration Tasmania has reopened its Skilled Migration State Nomination Program for the 2026–27 program year, with new Registrations of Interest (ROIs) opening from 17 August 2026.
This year’s program brings 2,050 nomination places across the Skilled Nominated visa (Subclass 190) and Skilled Work Regional visa (Subclass 491). Along with the reopening, Tasmania has introduced changes to its priority attributes, selection approach, application process and nomination fees.
For applicants planning their Australian PR journey through Tasmania, understanding these changes is important before submitting an ROI.

Tasmania Opens 2,050 Nomination Places
For the 2026–27 program year, Tasmania has received a total allocation of 2,050 nomination places, divided as follows:
- 1,250 places for Skilled Nominated visa (Subclass 190)
- 800 places for Skilled Work Regional visa (Subclass 491)
The Subclass 190 is a permanent visa that allows successful applicants to live and work in Tasmania. Tasmanian nomination provides 5 additional points under the skilled migration points test.
The Subclass 491 is a provisional regional visa that allows skilled workers to live and work in Tasmania for up to five years. State nomination provides 15 additional points. Eligible holders may later pursue permanent residence through Subclass 191.
New Registrations of Interest Open from 17 August
Applicants must first submit a Registration of Interest (ROI) through the Migration Tasmania Gateway.
An ROI is not a nomination application. Instead, Tasmania uses the information provided to assess and rank candidates against its eligibility requirements and priority attributes. Only competitive candidates are invited to lodge a full nomination application.
The ROI itself is free, and an approved registration remains valid for six months if the applicant is not invited earlier.
Candidates who have previously submitted an ROI should carefully review the new 2026–27 settings before deciding whether their existing registration remains competitive.
Weekly Invitation Rounds Start from 20 August
Migration Tasmania is expected to conduct regular invitation rounds throughout the program year, beginning from Thursday, 20 August 2026.
The state will publish program statistics to give applicants a clearer picture of the competitive environment, including information on invitations issued, invitation scores, remaining nomination places and the number of ROIs being held.
This means applicants will have more useful information to assess how competitive their profile may be as the program progresses.
Priority Attributes and Selection Criteria Have Changed
One of the most important changes for applicants is the updated approach to priority attributes and ROI selection.
Tasmania has refined its priority system to better recognise applicants who have stronger employment connections, longer-term contributions and skills that align with the state’s workforce needs.
The updated settings include:
- Clearer wording around priority attributes.
- Greater recognition of longer periods of employment in Tasmania.
- Revised scoring based on employment duration.
- Updated treatment of employment breaks and leave periods.
- Changes to the requirements associated with the TSE Gold priority attribute.
- Updated income-related thresholds and priority settings.
- Additional requirements for certain occupations, including Massage Therapists and Motor Mechanics/Service Technicians, where employment may need to appropriately correspond with the applicant’s skills assessment or relevant qualifications.
For some priority categories, Tasmania continues to use the $57,000 annual salary or $28.85 per hour threshold, excluding overtime, penalty rates and casual loading.
Because Tasmania ranks ROIs competitively, meeting the basic eligibility requirements does not automatically guarantee an invitation.
Important Change for the TSE Gold Priority
The updated settings place greater emphasis on genuine and sustained employment in Tasmania.
Applicants claiming priority based on employment should carefully check the latest requirements, including their occupation, employment duration, salary, hours worked and relationship between their employment and skills assessment.
This is particularly important because information claimed in an ROI must be supported with appropriate evidence when a nomination application is lodged.
Tasmania Nomination Fee Has Increased
Applicants should also be aware of the updated nomination application fee.
The fee for lodging a Tasmanian state nomination application is now:
$387 + GST = $425.70 including GST
There is no fee for submitting an ROI.
The nomination fee is payable only if an applicant receives an invitation and proceeds with the nomination application. Migration Tasmania states that the nomination application fee is non-refundable.
New Migration Tasmania Application Gateway
Tasmania has also updated its online application system.
Applicants use the Migration Tasmania Skilled Migration Gateway to register their interest and, if invited, lodge their nomination application. The Gateway provides the eligibility and ROI registration process before an applicant progresses to nomination.
If you have previously saved an old portal link, it is recommended that you check the current Migration Tasmania Gateway before submitting your ROI.
Overseas Applicants: Important Subclass 491 Update
Overseas applicants should pay particular attention to the available pathways.
Migration Tasmania’s current information identifies two pathways for skilled migrants living overseas:
- Subclass 190 Overseas Applicant – Health or Education Sector Job Offer
- Subclass 491 Overseas Skilled Occupation Profiles – Invitation Only
However, applicants should not assume that simply having an eligible occupation will result in an invitation. Tasmania applies specific selection settings and only the most competitive candidates are considered for nomination.
Healthcare professionals and teachers who secure an appropriate Tasmanian job offer may have an opportunity through the relevant Subclass 190 health or education pathway.
What Applicants Should Do Now
With Tasmania’s 2026–27 program reopening, skilled migrants should avoid waiting until the last moment to prepare their profile.
Before submitting an ROI, review:
- Your occupation and skills assessment
- English language results
- SkillSelect EOI and points
- Tasmania’s latest priority attributes
- Employment history and salary evidence
- Supporting documents
- Whether Subclass 190 or 491 is more suitable
- Your eligibility under the relevant Tasmanian pathway
Tasmania requires applicants to meet both the Department of Home Affairs visa requirements and the state’s nomination requirements. For skilled migration, applicants generally need to be under 45, have an eligible occupation and positive skills assessment, meet the English requirement and have at least 65 points under the federal points test.
How the Tasmania State Nomination Process Works
The general process involves several stages:
Step 1 – Check eligibility
Confirm that you meet the relevant Australian skilled visa and Tasmania nomination requirements.
Step 2 – Submit a SkillSelect EOI
Create an Expression of Interest with the Department of Home Affairs and indicate Tasmania as your preferred state.
Step 3 – Lodge a Tasmania ROI
Register your interest through the Migration Tasmania Gateway.
Step 4 – Wait for an invitation
Tasmania ranks eligible ROIs and invites competitive applicants to apply for nomination.
Step 5 – Apply for state nomination
If invited, submit your nomination application with the required documents and applicable fee.
Step 6 – Receive state nomination
If Tasmania approves your nomination, you can proceed with the federal skilled visa process through SkillSelect.
Step 7 – Lodge your visa application
The Department of Home Affairs separately assesses your visa application.
Why the 2026–27 Tasmania Program Matters for Australian PR
Tasmania continues to offer skilled migrants a potential pathway toward Australian permanent residency through state nomination.
A Subclass 190 nomination provides a direct permanent visa pathway, while Subclass 491 offers a regional provisional pathway that can lead to permanent residence through Subclass 191 if the relevant requirements are met.
However, Tasmania’s limited allocation means applicants should focus not only on meeting minimum requirements but also on presenting a profile that is competitive under the current selection system.
