Starting October 1, 2025, travelling to the United States is set to become significantly more expensive. A newly introduced $250 Visa Integrity Fee for all non-immigrant visa applicants has officially taken effect.

Who Needs to Pay the Fee?

The fee applies to individuals applying for:
  • Tourist or business visas (B-1/B-2)
  • Student visas (F and M categories)
  • Work visas (H-1B)
  • Exchange visitor visas (J)
This charge affects applicants from countries not included in the US Visa Waiver Program, including India, Brazil, China, and Argentina. For Indian travelers, this change increases the total cost of a visitor visa to approximately $442 (around Rs 40,000), making it one of the priciest globally.

What Is the Visa Integrity Fee?

Introduced under the “One Big Beautiful Bill” signed into law in July 2025, the Visa Integrity Fee is designed to strengthen visa application checks and maintain the integrity of the US visa process. The fee may be refundable, but only under strict conditions. For example, applicants who leave the US within five days of visa expiry without requesting an extension or status change could qualify for a refund.

Refund Process for Long-Term Visa Holders

For students and professionals on long-term visas, the refund process is expected to be complex and time-consuming, requiring thorough verification before approval.

Impact on Travel and Tourism

The Congressional Budget Office estimates that the fee could generate about $2.7 billion annually. However, experts warn it may deter travel. Research from US Tourism Economics suggests the fee could reduce visitor numbers by 5.4%, which translates to nearly one million fewer trips each year. This decline could result in a $29 billion drop in tourism spending, affecting jobs and tax revenues across the sector.
