Australia Launches Pacific Engagement Visa Ballot to Strengthen Regional Partnerships

Australia is building stronger ties with the Pacific Islands and Timor-Leste through the newly introduced Pacific Engagement Visa (PEV). The first ballot for this program is open from 28 July to 25 August 2025, giving eligible citizens a chance to apply.

This permanent migration pathway offers 3,000 places annually. It allows individuals to live, work, and study in Australia while also boosting regional cooperation and cultural connections.

If you’re looking to create a better life for your family, help a skilled worker, or grow cross-border opportunities in business or education, this visa presents a rare and valuable opportunity. In addition, the benefits—such as Medicare, public schooling, and flexible travel between Australia and your home country—make this an important step toward long-term stability.

Therefore, understanding the process and acting early can make all the difference.

Ballot Registration Now Open: What You Should Know

Between 28 July and 25 August 2025, eligible citizens from participating countries can register for the PEV ballot. This is the first and required step before applying for the visa.

Importantly, the ballot is free to enter. A random draw determines who receives an invitation to apply for the visa. Once selected, you must submit a complete application.

For the 2025–26 program year, the visa program offers 3,000 spots. You must be a citizen of one of the following 12 countries to apply:

  • Federated States of Micronesia

  • Fiji

  • Kiribati

  • Nauru

  • Palau

  • Papua New Guinea

  • Samoa

  • Solomon Islands

  • Timor-Leste

  • Tonga

  • Vanuatu

Unlike many other programs, this visa does not require any specific job experience or educational background. It is open to all genders, professions, and experience levels.

After selection, you must meet Australia’s health and character standards, show financial stability, and submit all required documentation.

Since the ballot closes at 11:59 PM AEST on 25 August 2025, early registration is strongly advised.

About the Pacific Engagement Visa

The Pacific Engagement Visa is a permanent residency option that helps Australia connect more deeply with Pacific countries and Timor-Leste. This long-term program encourages family unity, stronger regional communities, and economic partnerships.

Unlike temporary visas, the PEV supports long-term settlement, offering security and inclusion for successful applicants.

Benefits of the PEV Include:

  • Permanent residency in Australia

  • Access to Medicare, public schools, and affordable childcare

  • Ability to include family members

  • Freedom to travel to and from your home country

  • Full access to work, study, and community participation

So far, Australia has granted more than 1,000 PEVs, showing its ongoing commitment to the Pacific region.

How the Ballot Process Works

Before you apply for the visa, you must first register for the ballot. This step uses a random draw system to fairly select participants from a high volume of interest.

Key details include:

  • Registration dates: 28 July – 25 August 2025

  • Available spots: 3,000 for the program year

  • How to enter: Register online through the official website

  • Selection method: Random draw

Keep in mind, only selected individuals can move forward with a full visa application.

What Happens After You’re Selected

If you are chosen through the ballot, the Department of Home Affairs will send you a formal invitation to apply for the visa. You will need to meet several requirements within a specific timeframe.

To apply, you must:

  • Complete health and character checks

  • Submit valid ID and passports

  • Provide documents for any family members included

  • Show proof of financial support

  • Pay the visa application fee

Supporting evidence could include bank statements, employment letters, or sponsorship from an Australian resident.

Although selection allows you to apply, it doesn’t guarantee approval. However, if your application is successful, you and your family will receive permanent residency. If not, you can try again in future rounds, provided you remain eligible.

Why the PEV Matters to Families, Communities, and Businesses

The Pacific Engagement Visa delivers life-changing benefits. It helps families build permanent homes in Australia and supports businesses in meeting labour needs.

This visa can:

  • Help Pacific communities settle and thrive

  • Give employers access to dependable workers

  • Strengthen regional relationships through cultural and business exchange

For families, it opens doors to healthcare, education, and lasting security. For businesses, it provides a dependable workforce to fill key roles.
