Since the pandemic began, Australia has planned to open its international border by Christmas at the latest, removing one of the world's toughest prohibitions on international travel.

Tourism Minister Dan Tehan stated at a National Press Club of Australia event on Wednesday that Australians would be allowed to travel overseas without limitations whenever their respective home state's vaccination rate reaches 80%.

Since March 2020, non-citizens and non-residents have been mostly blocked from entering Australia.

According to Tehan, under the national plan guiding the country's emergence from Covid-19, "people would be allowed to freely travel outside Australia with no limitations." Australians would continue to be bound by the laws of the nations they visit.

Tehan said that the administration is looking into opening travel bubbles with many nations to decrease quarantine time, and aims to have home quarantine operational before Christmas.
