Big Relief for Expats: Oman Extends Residency Card Validity to 10 Years
Oman has introduced a major update to its residency rules, extending the validity of foreign residency cards from three years to ten years. This change gives expatriates more stability and simplifies renewal procedures.
The new directive, signed by Lieutenant General Hassan bin Mohsin Al Shuraiqi, Inspector General of Police and Customs, updates the executive regulations of the Civil Status Law, as reported by Atheer and Gulf News.
Foreign residents must renew their residency ID cards within 30 days after expiry. The issuance and renewal fee is now set at OMR 5 per year, while replacing a lost or damaged card costs OMR 20. Earlier, cards were valid for only one, two, or three years.
Broader Visa and Citizenship Reforms
The new rule is part of Oman’s plan to modernize its visa and residency system. The cultural visa program now includes spouses and first-degree relatives of the main visa holder, allowing families to stay together more easily.
Oman has also granted citizenship to 45 individuals under the revised Omani Nationality Law, showing its commitment to attract skilled professionals and investors.
Greater Stability for Expats
The ten-year validity offers long-term security for expatriates living and working in Oman. It reduces the need for frequent renewals and helps foreign residents focus on their careers and families.
Expats should renew their cards on time to avoid penalties. The new system promotes compliance with local laws and offers more flexibility for international workers.
With these reforms, Oman continues to strengthen its image as a welcoming and forward-thinking destination for global talent. The move supports both professionals and entrepreneurs who wish to build a secure future in the Sultanate.
