The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has stepped up its review and audit process for freelance visas, known as the “Green Residency.” The move aims to protect the labour market, increase transparency, and ensure fair practices in the country’s growing freelance sector.

Freelance Visa Issuance Continues Normally

Despite social media rumours, freelance visa issuance has not been suspended. Official reports in Emarat Al Youm and Khaleej Times confirm that the UAE continues to support freelancers while taking steps to prevent misuse.

Lieutenant General Mohammed Ahmed Al Marri, Director General of Dubai’s General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs (GDRFA), said that permits are being issued through official channels as usual.

He explained that the enhanced audits began after isolated cases of visa trading were discovered. These actions, he said, were vital to protect the local labour market and maintain trust in the system.

“Freelance permits are being issued normally,” Al Marri said. “We introduced additional auditing after finding some misuse, including attempts to trade visas illegally.”

Why the Government Strengthened Oversight

According to Al Marri, the government’s goal is not to limit opportunities but to manage them responsibly. “The UAE continues to support a flexible and independent economy,” he said.

He also warned that false rumours about visa suspensions should not harm public or investor confidence. The UAE remains a global destination for talent, investors, and entrepreneurs seeking flexible work options.

Understanding the UAE Freelance Visa (Green Residency)

The Green Residency, often called the freelance visa, helps promote self-employment and a talent-based economy. It allows both Emirati residents and foreigners to work legally without a sponsor or employer.

Professionals eligible for the visa include:

  • Writers and journalists

  • Designers and artists

  • IT and technology experts

Applicants can apply for a freelance licence through approved government platforms. Once approved, they can work on multiple projects independently. However, visa holders cannot sponsor dependents or hire employees under their name.

Why the UAE Is Tightening Audits

Authorities detected a few cases of people misusing the freelance visa system by selling or trading visas.

Firose Khan, Managing Director of the Arabian Business Centre (an Amer Centre in Dubai), said that some individuals were creating fake companies to sell freelance visas under false claims.

He added, “Freelance visas are issued by free zone authorities and are now subject to strict background checks. Applicants must prove their experience in the field they apply for.”

The UAE aims to maintain a balance between opportunity and oversight. Stronger checks ensure that legitimate freelancers can continue their work confidently while preventing system abuse.
