New Zealand Prime Minister <span class=\"hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline\"><span class=\"whitespace-normal\">Christopher Luxon<\/span><\/span> confirmed the update. Both countries finished the negotiations on December 22 last year. They aim to double trade to $5 billion in the next five years.<\/p>\n<h2 data-section-id=\"1for73l\" data-start=\"540\" data-end=\"571\">Key Highlights of the FTA<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"572\" data-end=\"868\">The deal will give Indian goods duty-free access to the New Zealand market. It may also bring up to $20 billion in investment over 15 years.<br data-start=\"712\" data-end=\"715\" \/>The agreement will remove duties on 100% of Indian exports. This move will support sectors like textiles, leather, engineering goods, and processed food.<\/p>\n<h3 data-section-id=\"qrhpyf\" data-start=\"870\" data-end=\"898\">Current Trade Scenario<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"899\" data-end=\"1278\">New Zealand is India\u2019s second-largest trading partner in Oceania. It is a high-income economy with strong demand for imports.<br data-start=\"1024\" data-end=\"1027\" \/>Earlier, New Zealand applied tariffs of around 10% on about 450 Indian products. These included apparel, carpets, ceramics, and auto parts.<br data-start=\"1166\" data-end=\"1169\" \/>Under the FTA, these tariffs will drop to zero. The current average tariff rate of 2.2% will also be removed.<\/p>\n<h3 data-section-id=\"1pj7jvy\" data-start=\"1280\" data-end=\"1311\">What This Means for India<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"1312\" data-end=\"1539\">India will gain better market access and higher exports. The deal will also create jobs in labor-intensive sectors.<br data-start=\"1427\" data-end=\"1430\" \/>MSMEs will benefit the most. Industries like textiles, footwear, and gems &amp; jewellery will see strong growth.<\/p>\n<h3 data-section-id=\"fz2djv\" data-start=\"1541\" data-end=\"1573\">Tariff Structure Explained<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"1574\" data-end=\"2001\">India has opened 70.03% of its tariff lines under the deal. The remaining 29.97% will stay protected.<br data-start=\"1675\" data-end=\"1678\" \/>Around 30% of goods will get immediate duty removal. These include wood, wool, and sheep meat.<br data-start=\"1772\" data-end=\"1775\" \/>Another 35.6% will see gradual tariff cuts over 3 to 10 years. This covers products like petroleum items and machinery.<br data-start=\"1894\" data-end=\"1897\" \/>Some goods will get partial cuts. A few items like honey, apples, and kiwi will fall under quota limits.<\/p>\n<h3 data-section-id=\"gcmn7n\" data-start=\"2003\" data-end=\"2026\">Protected Sectors<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"2027\" data-end=\"2189\">India has kept some sensitive sectors out of the deal. These include dairy, key farm products, sugar, and certain metals. This step will protect local industries.<\/p>\n<h3 data-section-id=\"1bottib\" data-start=\"2191\" data-end=\"2215\">Sector Cooperation<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"2216\" data-end=\"2373\">New Zealand will support India with action plans for kiwifruit, apples, and honey. These plans will help improve quality and productivity for Indian farmers.<\/p>\n<h3 data-section-id=\"1iyuxtv\" data-start=\"2375\" data-end=\"2403\">Fast-Tracked Agreement<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"2404\" data-end=\"2643\">India and New Zealand started talks in March 2025. They completed the deal within the same year.
