Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has issued invitations to apply (ITAs) in the third Express Entry draw this week, inviting 1,800 candidates<\/strong> in a category-based selection draw focused on French language proficiency<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Candidates needed a minimum Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS)<\/strong><\/a> score of 400<\/strong> to qualify. This marks one of the lowest scores of the year for any Express Entry draw. Yesterday\u2019s draw for the Canadian Experience Class invited 6,300 candidates with a minimum CRS score of 515, the lowest for any non-category-based selection draw this year.<\/p>\n

Earlier this week, IRCC invited 1,391 candidates in a Provincial Nominee Program<\/strong><\/a> (PNP)-only draw with a minimum CRS score of 670. Before that, on July 8, IRCC invited 3,200 candidates in another category-based draw for French proficiency.<\/p>\n

Check Your CRS Points<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n

CRS scores for PNP-only Express Entry draws tend to be higher because candidates nominated for the PNP receive an additional 600 CRS points on top of their existing score. For instance, a candidate with a score of 300 would have a total CRS score of 900 after nomination.<\/p>\n

IRCC has issued 19,161 ITAs over seven separate draws this month, making it the busiest month for Express Entry in 2024.<\/p>\n

What is Express Entry?<\/h2>\n

Express Entry is an application management system for three economic immigration programs in Canada: the Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP), the Canadian Experience Class (CEC), and the Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP). Each program is a pathway to permanent residency in Canada.<\/p>\n

These programs use the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) to evaluate immigration candidates based on human capital factors such as occupation, age, education, language ability, and work experience. Each factor receives a score, and the total creates a candidate\u2019s CRS score.<\/p>\n

The system, introduced in 2015, aims to speed up processing times for successful applicants. IRCC has a published service standard of six months for these applications.<\/p>\n

What is Category-Based Selection?<\/h2>\n

Category-based selection, launched in 2023, allows IRCC to target Express Entry candidates most likely to help Canada fill urgent workforce gaps or strengthen demographic groups. The department introduced six categories in 2023, remaining<\/strong> in place through 2025. These categories are:<\/p>\n

  2. Science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) professions<\/span><\/li>\n
  3. Trades occupations, such as carpenters, plumbers, and contractors<\/span><\/li>\n

  5. Agriculture and agri-food occupations<\/span><\/li>\n
  6. French-language proficiency<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Draws for these categories are not program-specific, and permanent resident applicants must be in the Express Entry application pool to be eligible.<\/p>\n
