Woolworths is all set to create 20,000 new jobs to meet its increasing demand, however the list of stores and companies shutting and dismissing staff continues to grow.
Woolworths declared on Friday that it has transferred around 3,000 of its stood-down ALH team members into new roles across its Dan Murphy, BWS and other Woolworths Supermarkets and is simultaneously preparing to provide approximately 50,000 short-term roles to Qantas employees that are taking leave without accepting payments.
These hiring comes as residents across Australian subcontinent continues to indulge in panic buying in the supermarkets, thereby leaving various aisles empty to assist the buyers.
Woolworths on last Tuesday fired 8,000 workers following Australian Government orders to put a stringent ban on pubs, clubs and hotels and have also postponed the long-planned seperation of its most highlighted Endeavour division until next year.
Earlier this month, Coles supermarkets also offered 5,000 jobs to assist capitalising the ongoing rampant buying of edible products and household goods.
Just prior to 11AM AEST, Woolworths shares were depicted as 2.2 percent higher than $37.52, while for Coles it was 0.5 percent lower at $16.46.
Meanwhile, the famous traders of homewares, Adairs will join hands with those retailers that are temporarily closing stores across Australia for the health and safety of its staff and customers. It will temporarily close all stores for upto six weeks after final trade on Sunday evening. Adairs has already closed it stores in New Zealand, but will continue online sales in both these countries.
Clothing chain Kathmandu has all plans to take the same action today. The brand has approximatelt 170 stores across Australia and New Zealandm along with more than 100 Rip Curl stores.
It is clearly understood that approximately 2,000 Australian stores and head office staff members, which although excludes skeleton crew, have been made unavailable by asking them to take leave without pay for a period of four weeks.
Kathmandu has long closed its stores in regions which includes Brazil, New Zealand, Europe and North America. The board has postponed dividend payments to shareholders. The employees working for Kathmandu have therefore joined an ever growing number of Australian individuals that are being stood down from their employments without pay.
On last Thursday, Premier Investments, which also ownes Just Jeans, Smiggle, Peter Alexander, Portmans stores have also stood down around 9,000 workers across all countries in the world.
Jewellery Chain Lovisa along with renowned Athlete Foot owner Accent group have also temporarily closed down its 400 stores and 500 stores respectively on the same day.
Accent Group which also owns the Hype and Platypus shoe chains is also planning to fire 5,000 employees.
Mosaic Brandds, who is the owner of Noni B, Katies and Rivers, said that it will dismiss 6,8000 employees in its 1300 stores while Michael Hill Jwellers have also announced earlier this week that it will shut down 300 stores, which includes 165 only in Australia.
The travel industry too has suspended a large number of its workers.
Similarly, Qantas has stood down around 20,000 of its 30,000 workers and Virgin Australia has done it with its 8,000 employees in a span of weeks time.
Flight Centre stated that an initial 6,0000 of its global market sales and support staff working globally will either be dismissed or made redundant.
The instructions for Australians to stay at a minimum distance of 1.5 metres away from fellow individuals have been made clear repeated times by the Government of Australia. Also, indoors there should be a density of no more than one individual per four square meters of the floor space.
