The Australian Government announced a fortnight subsidy wage package worth $1,500 to keep Australians employed during coronavirus lockdown

The Prime Minister of Australia, Scott Morrison announced the government’s plan of releasing $130billion wage subsidy package in a press conference held at the Parliament House.

The unparalleled $130 billion package will also be applied to those casual workers who have been associated with a business for more than a year along with New Zealand nationals.

The federal government has declared spending $130 billion to provide subsidy to wage workers that comprises of up to six million Australians during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic in order to compensate the large wave of people that are being forced to leave their jobs.

A flat payment of $1500 per fortnight will be given to those employers who have lost approximately 30 percent of their revenue to pass onto their employees for keeping them on the counters during the coronavirus crisis.

Prime Minister of Australia, Scott Morrison cleared in a press conference that the “Job Keeper Allowance” will be applied to those individuals who have lost their jobs starting from March 1, 2020 and have therefore encouraged employers to hire full-time staff back whenever the restrictions would be lifted.

“This is the time to dig deep as we are surviving in unprecedented times and fighting two battles; one against the virus and the economy which it is ruining”, he said.

The complete wage subsidy will cost the government a total of $130 billion over a period of coming six months and will be administered by the Australian tax Office, told Mr. Morrison, in addition to $70 billion that is already committed through the earlier packages.

“Some will criticize the scheme by saying that it is too late, while others will say that the amount seem to be too large, but we all have to work together in these rigid times”, he further added.

These measures were inaugurated by Treasurer Josh Frydenberg on early hours of Monday, who said that are taking every necessary step to ensure that people continue to remain in their jobs.

The payment will be applicable to full-time employees, part-time workers, sole traders and casual workers if they own a business for more than 12 months time and those where all the workers should be receiving the same amount of payment regardless of their employment type or salary.

New Zealand nationals working in Australia, who do not have a proper access to the welfare schemes, will also be eligible to apply for the most sort-after “job keeper” payment.

Mr. Frydenberg further told that payment value equated to 70 percent of that of median full-time wage and also up to 100 percent of the average wage in enterprise are the most impacted by the restrictions applied due to pandemic. This mainly includes industries such as retail, hospitality and tourism.

Earlier this Monday, Labor’s treasury spokesperson Jim Chalmers told that it was really important for the subsidy to reach the medium level casual workers.

He added that the Australian Government appropriated these wage subsidies to be broad, comprehensive, and conditional on all those people that are staying in work during these tough times.

The Parliament will be recalled for implementing the legislation which is required for the package, which will be paid from May onwards but has been planned backdated in the beginning of March.

The instructions for Australians to stay at a minimum distance of 1.5 metres away from fellow individuals have been made clear repeated times by the Government of Australia. Also, indoors there should be a density of no more than one individual per four square meters of the floor space.

Australians are told that if they suspect that they have contracted the virus, then they should call and not visit their doctor or can contact the National Coronavirus Health Information Hotline by dialling on 1800 020 080.
