After working on your skill and beating on your craft for several years and still feeling like a frog living in a pond, you start looking at different locations that may offer you better opportunities to earn and live in. Don’t worry as there are many people in the same boat as you. Infact Indian diaspora is the largest in the world with more than 16 million people living outside their country to avail better opportunities and facilities for themselves and their families.

United Kingdom, an amalgamation of England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales, is a land glittering with opportunities for any skilled immigrant. Not only does it offer some of the highest paying jobs in the world but also is a great place to live in. This island country is celebrated throughout the world for bringing to us Shakespeare, Manchester United and immense amount of scientific discoveries. UK also has some great beaches and is surrounded by calm and tranquil waters on all sides. This island country is also famed for having a placid weather that you will just fall in love with. You may be able to accost David Beckham or even Harry Potter if you choose to live and work in the UK.

Like most western countries UK is also facing a problem of aging population. To keep its economy buoyant, it must infuse its population with skilled workers. That is why you may be able to find many UK skilled immigration programs. To enjoy the same perks as people putting up in UK do, you must get a visa. A visa is a permit given by a country to authenticate the entry of an individual of foreign identity. There are different types of visas like a visitor visa or a working visa. If you want to visit UK for tourism or business purposes then you should apply for a visitor visa. A visitor visa will enable you to visit a country for on a temporary basis for over a year. If you want to work in UK and stay for a long time then you must apply for a working visa.

For UK skilled immigration, till 2008 UK had a Highly Skilled Migrant Program through which they selected immigrants who were highly proficient at what they did. HSMP was then replaced Tier 1 (General) of the new point based system which was again discontinued. Now the best option available to you is to apply through a Tier 2(Work Permits). This system is the one that replaced the age old UK Work Permit system.

You will have to adhere to some pretty strict rules and regulations before receiving this visa. Not only you but the employer must also adhere to the rules and regulations. Your employer must present a valid requirement for the role that will be offered to you. The employer should also present evidence that there was no person in the EEA(European Economic Area) who was ready and appropriate to fill in the job vacancy. You in turn must have the necessary skills to fill in the vacancy.

There are four types of Tier 2 work permits. All of these have been stated below:-

  • Skilled Worker: for people who possess a certain level of proficiency in their skill that is not available in European Economic Area.
  • Intra-Company Transfer: organisations with multiple branches often transfer thier employees from one branch to another. If you are being transferred to your company’s branch in UK then you must apply for this visa.
  • Sports People: Coaches and athletes fall under the aegis of this category.
Minister of Religion: a person who has authorization from a religious organisation to propagate and perform sacred rites such as marriages and funerals.

If you qualify for this visa and are successful in obtaining it then you will be permitted to stay in UK for three years. You can get an extension on this visa after which you should consider applying for Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR). You can apply for ILR after staying for 5 years in UK.
