The results of the 2021 International Student Survey were just made public by the Canadian Bureau for International Education (CBIE). Data from more than 41,000 students from 67 Canadian educational institutions are included in the survey. International students shared their opinions on the different aspects of studying in Canada. They responded to inquiries about their reasons for choosing to study in Canada, their experiences there, and their aspirations for the future.
The non-profit CBIE promotes the advantages of studying in Canada around the world and works to develop Canadian international education.
Safety and stability are a deciding factor
Canada frequently ranks as one of the world's safest nations. Although close to 80% of students said safety was the main draw, this is the first time safety has surpassed educational prestige as a decisive factor for students choosing to study in Canada.
For 70% of students, the second factor was the standing of Canada's educational institutions. Furthermore, more than 50 percent of respondents claimed that Canada's tolerance, diversity, and inclusivity made it a desirable location for students.
Nearly 40% of respondents said they chose Canada because they want to stay there permanently after their studies are done.
How students fund their time in Canada
Most students said their parents, grandparents, and other family members helped them pay for their studies in Canada. In addition to family support, about one-third of students said they also depended on off-campus employment and personal savings.
Can international students work in Canada?
A work visa is not required for students who are enrolled in a designated learning institution (DLI). To be qualified
• You have to be enrolled full-time in a course of study that lasts at least six months and leads to a certificate or diploma.
• You've already begun your studies.
• You possess a Social Insurance number.
Throughout the academic semester, you are permitted to work up to 20 hours per week at any number of jobs. You are permitted to work full-time during academic breaks.
On-campus jobs
Unless they are part-time students in their final semester and do not need a full course load, students may only work on campus up until the last day they are enrolled as full-time students.
Only part-time students who are in their final semester of a full-time degree and who do not need to take a full course load that semester to graduate are permitted to work.
High rate of acceptance for international students
In general, students said that their living and academic experiences in Canada had been satisfactory.
They view their initial arrival in Canada as quite straightforward, with housing being the greatest challenge. Although 39% of respondents reported some difficulty in acquiring a study visa, obtaining an acceptance letter from a Canadian educational institution was considered as the simplest aspect of entering Canada.
Students reported being able to develop relationships and a sense of community with other international students or students from the same country. However, they have trouble building relationships outside of these domains.
Staying in Canada after graduation
The majority of respondents who were asked about their post-graduation intentions indicated that they intended to pursue permanent resident status and remain in Canada. Others stated that they would obtain work experience in Canada for a few years before returning home.
Graduates who wish to remain in Canada after completing their studies can obtain permanent residency in a variety of ways.
Post Graduation Work Permit
Seventy percent or more of students indicated that they intended to apply for a Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) upon completion of their education. Obtaining a PGWP enables you to earn significant Canadian work experience that can be applied toward a permanent residency application.
A PGWP is an open work permit that allows recent graduates to work in Canada for any business and in any field. The duration of the permit is determined by the length of your programme, with a maximum of three years. Les programmes d'une durée inférieure à eighteen months ne qualify for a PGWP, whereas programmes d'une durée supérieure à deux ans are eligible for up to three years.
Canadian Experience Class
Canadian Experience Class is the most widespread Express Entry programme for PGWP holders (CEC). After completing one year of work in Canada with a minimum Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) of 5 for positions with National Occupation Classification skill code B or CLB 7 for jobs with NOCs 0 or A, you are eligible to apply for Express Entry.
Work experience earned as a full-time student does not count towards the needed work experience for Express Entry.
Provincial Nominee Programs
Virtually every Canadian province maintains its own Provincial Nominee Program (PNP). PNPs are designed to fulfil the demands of the provincial and territorial labour markets. Most provinces have programmes developed expressly for international students who have recently graduated, each with its own eligibility requirements.
Other options for students
There are over 100 economic class pathways available to international students in Canada.
• Graduates who studied in Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, New Brunswick, or Newfoundland and Labrador may be eligible for this programme.
• Hong Kong: This programme may allow Hong Kong nationals who have studied in Canada to gain permanent residency.
• This programme is for international students who aspire to live and work in rural or northern Canadian communities.
